As one of the most beloved and historic destinations on campus, Memorial Union is the place to come socialize, relax, study, eat, and enjoy all the beautiful sunsets and lake views that Madison has to offer. Since opening its doors in 1928, it has offered a variety of social and educational activities for UW students, faculty, Wisconsin Union Members, and the Madison community. Among its many treasures, the building houses a 1,200 seat theater, Strada Italian Cuisine, Carte Soups &amp; Salads, the Daily Scoop Ice Cream, Badger Market, Peet\u2019s Coffee, Der Rathskeller German-Style Tavern, Wheelhouse Studios, Wisconsin Hoofers, various art exhibits, and plentiful study space. The Terrace functions as a great place to enjoy a beautiful day, grab a beer with friends or colleagues, sunbathe or swim off the pier, and catch one of Madison\u2019s stunning sunsets. When the Terrace was first envisioned in the fall of 1928, it was thought to serve as a fun meeting place, a sort of \u201cundergraduate playground.\u201d Today, its mission and purpose of being an enjoyable gathering spot for students, parents and alumni continues to improve. Located just steps from the Memorial Union, the building features modern lecture halls, flexible classrooms, and well-equipped teaching laboratories designed to support both presentations and interactive learning. Attendees will benefit from comfortable, technology-enabled spaces that foster discussion, collaboration, and hands-on engagement. As a central hub for chemistry education and research on campus, it offers a welcoming and functional environment for connecting with colleagues and exploring new ideas.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Going Green<\/h3>\n<p>Conference Management and the Wisconsin Union strive to promote green conferences and events and ask our conference guests to help us in those efforts.<\/p>\n<p>We have replaced plastic usage with compostable fiber plastic made from renewable sources for all our food service needs.<\/p>\n<p>Our efforts for greener meetings:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>100% post-consumer content nametags<\/li>\n<li>Biodegradable nametag holders &amp; recycling bin at conference headquarters<\/li>\n<li>Recycling bins located at all meals and on every floor of meeting site<\/li>\n<li>Online mailings, communication, and promotion of conference events<\/li>\n<li>Surplus food donated to local food bank<\/li>\n<li>Airport shuttles to minimize car and taxi trips<\/li>\n<li>Reusable conference signage to direct conference participants<\/li>\n<li>Online registration &amp; electronic registration information communication<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We are very proud of our changes and will continue to make future decisions based on alternative sources and environmental stewardship!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>More Than a Land Acknowledgement<\/h3>\n<p>BCCE 2026 will take place on Ho-Chunk land\u2014land known as\u00a0<i>Teejop<\/i>\u00a0(Day-JOPE). The Ho-Chunk Nation has stewarded this place since time immemorial. Despite centuries of forced removal, the Ho-Chunk people have continually returned, and their sovereign presence endures today.<\/p>\n<p>We recognize that the University of Wisconsin\u2013Madison, our host institution, occupies this land as a result of colonization and displacement. This acknowledgment is not a conclusion\u2014it is a beginning. A reminder that Indigenous people are still here, and that their histories, knowledge systems, and futures matter in the ongoing work of education and science.<\/p>\n<p>As we prepare to gather in Teejop for this international conference of chemistry educators, we invite participants to reflect with care and curiosity:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What does it mean to teach, learn, and collaborate on land that was never ceded?<\/li>\n<li>How do our practices in chemistry education include\u2014or exclude\u2014Indigenous people and perspectives?<\/li>\n<li>How can our work be more relational, responsible, and responsive to the histories and communities that shape this place?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We do not offer this as a welcome\u00a0<i>to<\/i>\u00a0the land\u2014this land is not ours to welcome you to.
